The care and feeding of earthworms

Sparky just came in with one of her toy dishes wanting to fill it with water so she could give her earthworm a drink.
Fearing a huge mess, I took the bowl to fill it. I handed it to her. Such a fuss! The bowl still had soil in it and I hadn't washed it out.
Sparky: NO GRAMMA! Da dish is dirty. You have to wash it so my worm can drink it,
Me: (To myself - ummm...the worm is crawling through dirt. That's what they do.)

So I washed the dish and fuilled it with clean water, and offered to carry it to her worm to avoid having to clean up a trail of spilled water.

Out the door and across the yard we went with Sparky leading and instructing me the whole time.

Sparky: The worm is pooping right now, We have to let him finish, and then when he's done, we will give him a bath and a drink of water.

We reached the freshly dug garden patch and there was a huge, fat worm crawling through the soil.

Sparky: Pick it up Gramma.

Me: I'm not picking up a yucky worm.

Sparky: (Sounding exasperated.) Oh Gramma. It's jus a worm. OK. I'll pick it up.

As she bent to do just that, her father came along, so I made a hasty retreat and let her Daddy play hero and prep the earthworm for its bath.

Ah, the joys of having a lover of animals of all species for a granddaughter when one is slightly bug phobic. LOL
